Scooped today. Do you need to dump the whole box? “Change the litter” can mean three different jobs: remove waste, replace the clean litter you removed, or empty and wash the entire box. Mixing them up is why a calendar answer can feel both too strict and not strict enough.
Choose the job before choosing the day
1. Waste or clumps are present? Scoop.
Remove them. Purina and Chewy both recommend at least daily scooping. This is not a full litter replacement.
2. The clean litter layer is lower? Top up.
Use the same litter and follow that product's fill-depth instructions. Adding fresh litter does not clean residue from the tray.
3. The full-change interval has arrived—or the box needs it sooner? Empty and wash.
Follow your box and litter makers' cleaning instructions, then rinse, dry, and refill. Someone else's interval is not a guarantee for yours.
If you need a starting routine today: scoop at least daily; check your exact litter and box instructions for the full-change method and interval; note when you last emptied and washed the box. More cats, non-clumping litter, moisture, odor, or a dirty tray can mean the routine needs attention sooner. Do not wait for a calendar reminder if the box is visibly soiled.
Why do guides give different full-change dates?
Even one maker gives more than one answer. Purina's current pages describe different scopes; they are not four dates to average into a rule for your box:
- General Purina US article: daily scooping, replacing removed litter, and a weekly whole-box change and wash.
- Tidy Cats litter-box tips: for clumping litter, daily scooping and a complete change about every other week.
- Tidy Cats FAQ: daily solid-waste scooping and an entire-box dump and wash every month.
- Breeze system instructions (PDF): daily solids removal, a weekly pad change, and a monthly complete pellet replacement. A pad is not the litter.
These are maker-published statements checked October 10, 2026, not personalized care instructions. The Breeze pellet-and-pad system is not a schedule for an ordinary clumping tray. Check the directions on your exact litter and box first, including the method and when to do it sooner. If the packaging leaves the interval unclear, ask its maker with the product name and your setup; do not silently pick the shortest, longest, or average date from these pages. Chewy's guide also distinguishes clumping from non-clumping litter. A sudden change in your cat's elimination or box use is a veterinary question, not a reason to guess a cleaning interval.
What counts as a full litter change?
- Put used litter into a suitable trash bag and follow the litter maker's disposal instructions. Do not assume it can be flushed.
- Wash the emptied box using the box maker's compatible method. For an ordinary manual tray, Chewy describes mild, unscented soap and warm water; avoid transferring that instruction to an automatic unit or an incompatible material.
- Rinse and dry the tray before refilling. Use the depth recommended for your litter and the box. Then note the date and the next check.
A perfumed cleaner is not a shortcut for an unwashed tray. Purina cautions that strong household-cleaner scents can make a box less appealing to a cat; both guides also emphasize washing your hands after handling used litter.
Copy a litter-box handoff that someone else can actually use
Write one note for each box. Keep product-specific directions with the supplies; do not put a guessed full-change date on another person's shift.

Last scoop / person: ____

If your concern is a change in the cat's toileting pattern, not the cleaning schedule, use our separate litter-box observation log for a veterinary conversation. If the problem is whether your cat can physically use the tray, see the large-cat litter-box fit guide; a cleaning timer cannot fix a doorway or turning-space problem.
Quick answers
Is scooping every day enough?
No. It removes waste but does not replace the full litter change and box wash described by the litter and box makers. Track those as separate jobs.
Does topping up fresh litter reset the full-change clock?
No. Topping up replaces volume after scooping; it does not clean the remaining litter or tray. Follow the product's replacement guidance and the actual box condition.
What if my cat suddenly avoids the box?
Check access and cleanliness, but do not assume cleaning is the cause. Contact your veterinarian about a sudden change in box use or elimination habits; the household note is not a diagnosis.
