Litter Boxes for Large Cats: Compare Space Before Buying

20.5 inches outside; 15 inches at the inside bottom. That is IRIS model 589655, not a fit verdict. Check the exact interior, entry and cleaning space before buying for a large cat.

Compare the space your cat can actually use

When comparing litter boxes for large cats, check usable interior space, the entrance and the room needed to reach and clean the box. An “XL” label, breed photo or outside measurement does not establish that a particular cat can use it comfortably.

This guide helps you compare candidates before buying. It includes five manufacturer-specification examples. If your cat has a new change in toileting, seek veterinary advice rather than assuming a different box will solve it.

How much space can an outside number hide? For one exact model, IRIS USA Large Top Entry 589655, the maker lists 20.5 × 14.75 inches outside but 15 × 9.75 inches at the inside bottom—a 5.5-inch length gap and 5-inch width gap between those named surfaces. Its 9.25-inch-diameter top opening is a third, separate measurement. The bottom figure is not a fit test, and this is not the IRIS XXL model compared below. Check the exact model, entry and interior before deciding.

Two more size labels, two different measurement planes

These maker pages were checked October 8, 2026. The figures are published specifications. Published dimensions alone do not establish fit.

  • IRIS Jumbo Hooded, model 588423: IRIS lists 21 inches overall length and 15.25 inches inside length, a 5.75-inch difference between those published figures. The page calls the latter “inside dimensions” but does not establish the clear usable floor length for your cat. Check the maker's exact-model specifications.
  • Modkat Flip: Modkat lists 20.5 inches overall length and 17.5 inches base length, a 3-inch difference. Its base figure is not a claim about every point in the box or the space left with its liner in place. Check Modkat's named measurements.

“Inside” and “base” are differently named surfaces, so the gaps above are not an apples-to-apples product score. A larger gap alone does not make a box worse. For your exact candidate, ask where the clear inside length and width were taken, whether a liner or sloping wall changes them, and whether your cat can enter and turn without crowding.

Four checks before comparing prices

  1. Usable interior: Ask for clear inside length and width, where those measurements were taken, and any space lost to a liner, sloping sides or cover. A product's outer footprint answers a different question: how much room it occupies.
  2. Entrance: Record the opening width and height, the threshold above the floor, and whether entry is from the front or top. A tall side wall and an easy-to-use entrance are separate features. Do not infer access from a photo of a different cat.
  3. Room and route: Check the actual location, the approach and space above a covered box. Avoid deciding from an empty floor rectangle alone. Doors, furniture and other household activity can change how the space works.
  4. Routine cleaning: Can you reach in, open or remove the lid as instructed, and lift out the pan? Check the emptying route and the manufacturer's cleaning instructions before purchase. A lid that opens in a studio photo might meet a shelf in your home.

Already have a box that fits? Its upkeep is a separate decision. Our cat-litter change guide separates daily scooping, topping up, and a full box wash; follow the instructions for your exact litter and box.

Cat Friendly Homes' guidance, contributed by veterinarian Dr. Ilona Rodan, uses a box length of 1.5 times the cat's nose-to-base-of-tail length and emphasizes space to enter and turn around. Treat this as general guidance, not a formula that certifies a product. Do not substitute a tail-inclusive measurement or the box's exterior length for a usable-space check.

The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative also emphasizes room to stand and turn, accessible placement and individual box preferences. A covered design is not automatically better for a large cat. Do not force a cat into a candidate box to demonstrate fit.

Two more source examples: what is actually measured?

Manufacturer information checked September 15, 2026. Measurements below are in inches, ordered length × width × height. These examples illustrate specification questions; they are not equivalent products, recommendations or a current stock check. Confirm the exact version with the seller.

Published measurements, not verified fit
Check IRIS XXL with scoop Modkat XL
Exterior 30 × 20 × 14 21 × 16.5 × 17 (text panel)
Interior Not verified Diagram: 20.5 × 16.25 × 16; units conflict
Entry Entry height: 6.5 Front or top entry; page and diagram differ

IRIS: an exterior measurement is not floor space

The IRIS XXL product page lists the dimensions above. The black-model diagram shows those arrows outside the pan. We could not verify usable internal dimensions from that page and diagram. Ask for them for the exact model and configuration; do not label the 30-inch figure “interior length.”

Modkat: keep conflicting numbers visible

The Modkat XL Dimensions panel gives front opening 8.3 × 9.8, threshold 6.25 and top-entry width 10.25. Its published diagram instead shows 8.5 × 10, 6 and 9 respectively. The diagram pairs a 16-inch interior height with 39 cm; those units do not agree. The Benefits text also gives a 16.3-inch outer width rather than the panel's 16.5.

Ask which figures apply to the current version, including how interior space is measured with the liner installed. Do not silently choose between conflicting specifications. The stated 30-pound lid capacity and 9-pound product weight do not establish that a cat has enough space.

Use the comparison for your actual situation

  • A long-bodied cat: You have an exterior dimension but no clear interior measurement. Keep the interior field unanswered and ask the seller. A large outside number is not enough to approve the candidate.
  • A small apartment: A covered box's footprint fits the planned location, but lid access and the cat's approach are unclear. Check those spaces before buying. Do not choose an undersized box simply to fit a narrow gap.
  • Two household decision-makers: One person found a product page and the other a diagram with different numbers. Keep both links, identify the conflict and wait for a model-specific answer. Do not average the measurements.

These are hypothetical decision examples, not observed outcomes. A furniture enclosure creates an additional compatibility question. If you already own a tray, use our six-number litter-box enclosure fit worksheet to compare it with one specific cabinet. Neither this guide nor that paper check establishes that either example will work inside a cabinet or with an automatic system.

Copy these questions to the seller

Replace the blanks with your candidate's exact model and source links. A general “suitable for large cats” reply does not resolve missing measurements.

  • For model / color / configuration ______, what is the usable inside length × width, and where are those measurements taken?
  • With the supplied liner and cover fitted, what clear interior height and entrance width × height remain?
  • What is the threshold height above the floor, and what clearance is needed for the intended front or top entry?
  • Your page says ______ and your diagram says ______. Which figures and units describe the version you currently sell?
  • Where are the current setup and cleaning instructions, and what space is needed to open the cover and remove the pan? What are the current return conditions?

Keep a private candidate record

Copy this plain-text record into your own notes for each model. No account, email or upload is needed; this page does not collect your answers. Leave unknown fields unanswered until you have evidence.

  • Exact model / configuration / source links / date checked: ______
  • Cat's size reference and existing entry preference: ______
  • Usable interior dimensions / measurement basis / unresolved field: ______
  • Entrance dimensions / threshold / front or top entry: ______
  • Available room space / approach / cover and cleaning clearance: ______
  • Conflicting specifications / seller's written answer / instruction link: ______
  • Decision: keep comparing, exclude, or consider buying — because ______

If none of the candidates resolves your constraints, keep looking. Do not turn an unanswered question into a “fits” decision to finish the shortlist.
